London, U.K., 23 March 2021 – According to a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Xtravirt and VMware published 23 March 2021, cloud challenges exist beyond initial adoption; in fact, they intensify during ongoing cloud management. Firms struggle to achieve a steady state of operational management of the multicloud and are left to self-manage, failing to optimise their investment in cloud.
The study “Optimise Your Cloud Management Strategy And Succeed” involved 156 senior cloud decision makers and influencers at UK enterprises in education, public sector, insurance, healthcare, and retail, who have already (at least in part) adopted the cloud. The custom survey was completed in January 2021.
A myriad of factors was already driving cloud transition, but the COVID-19 pandemic has only accelerated it. Whilst existing cloud adopters look to expand their implementation, they are aware of the challenges, both during adoption, and through ongoing operational management. To overcome the hurdles, they are turning to managed services providers (MSP’s).
Key highlights from this study include:
- Technology leaders accept multicloud as their default operating model. The study found that nearly half of organisations have already adopted or are expanding/upgrading their adoption of a multicloud strategy.
- Cloud adoption challenges carry over into ongoing cloud management. For example, access to skilled resources becomes a more prevalent challenge, increasing in occurrence from 24% to 33% among surveyed firms, when transitioning from the cloud adoption phase to ‘steady state’ operational management.
- Managed services investment is a key priority for 2021. Of those organisations who do not currently use an MSP, 74% are planning to invest in an MSP in the next 12 months.
“Despite hybrid and multicloud being the operating model of choice for so many businesses, maintaining the benefits of cloud, putting the necessary controls in place, and achieving a steady state is proving challenging” said Gavin Jolliffe, CEO, Xtravirt. “This study has helped us to deepen our understanding of the issues, so that we can keep innovating, and developing new services that will enable our customers to tackle the challenges of cloud head on.
